My Definition of New Media

The Term New Media is an Over used catch all Buzz phrase that has swept over us like the plague. Any new item that came out is automatically ‘NEW MEDIA’, at least this is what I thought when I first started this class. To paraphrase Wikipedia, New Media encompasses most technology of the late 20th Century and on. This doesn’t include Television or published material. I now know that it is a very difficult concept to explain. Any New media will allow the users to interact with a community of other users. Material is both created and used by everyone expanding the limits of the imagination. Paul Colligan spoke at Google in 2008 saying that affordable tech is here today, you can for under $1000 buy a recording studio and produce your own content. There is no need to pitch your idea to anyone, you simply put your concept out there and it can succeed or fail. It is because of corporate executives that concepts such as youtube and facebook did not arise sooner. New media allows an open world with endless possibilities.

The technology of new media is far more accessible than most realize
